Three Day Old Kittens With Their Mommy

May 26th, 2013 | Author: Kitten | 2 Comments »

Long time readers of The Daily Cute may recall seeing my kitties posted here over the last few years. Well, there are now three new additions to the family. Kitten Number One, or Number One for short, was born around 4am on Friday, March 24th. Steve, my oldest kitty who is in fact a girl (long story), decided to share this moment with me by crawling under the covers, lying down on my tummy and having her first baby there. I was unable to lie in bed all day to serve as a nest so Steve took her kitten to the nest we set up for her. Since Steve was being a good Mommy, I decided to leave her to get acquainted with her little one. I checked in on her later and noticed she was panting. Upon investigation, I realized Steve was having another kitten. Kitten Number Two, Number Two for short, was born just after 10 am. I felt her tummy and was sure I felt more happening in there but she went about feeding and cleaning her kittens so I figured she was done. Checking in several times throughout the day, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary. She was eating, she was feeding her babies. All seemed well. Then around 5 in the afternoon, I returned for another visit and discovered Number Three.

The Sleepy Mama

The Sleepy Mama

All was not well for Number Three. Number One and Number Two were trying to eat and climbing all over their new sibling in the process. Mama was having a hard time getting to the little one to clean him. It was a two creature effort between Steve and I but we managed to get the little one cleaned but he was far from out of the woods. He was struggling to breathe and was getting cold quickly. To make matters worse, Steve seemed to want little to do with the newborn. I chalk that up to exhaustion and the other two kittens clawing at her belly. She fled to another nest we’d made and took her first two kittens with her. I took Number Three, wrapped him in a towel and kept him warm for a few minutes before offering him back to Steve. Steve took him again, letting the little one cuddle against her belly. Not wanting her to feel overwhelmed, I once again left them alone. When I came back to check in, Number Three was alone again, curled up in a ball and cold to the touch. I thought he was gone but I was wrong. When I touched him, he started moving and crying. My husband took his turn, picking up the tiny baby and cuddling it in his shirt. We offered the little one to Steve again but this time, Steve rolled to her side and the baby began suckling. Two days later and Number Three is getting bigger and is just as strong as his older siblings. Right now, it’s hard to get photos of them on their own but here are a few I wanted to share until I could get some better ones.

There are actually three kittens in this picture. Number Two is on the far left, Number Three is in the middle (the only double pawed kitty in the litter, just like his daddy) and Number One is on the far right. Number One is the little patch of black that looks like he may be a spot on Mama.

The gorgeous baby in the photo above is Number Three – our miracle kitty. We have loving, wonderful homes for Number One and Number Two but Number Three is going to stay right here in our happy household. We couldn’t let him go after everything he went through.

mama and her babies

Finally, we have Mama Steve and her babies. Not pictures is Daddy. He has been curious about the little ones but isn’t allowed to stay in the same room with Mama and her wee ones unattended. He has been getting a few extra scritches and treats so he doesn’t feel left out but he refused to be part of the photoshoot.
